Musical trio that widened the scope of hip hop by fusing it with other genres
Ms. Lauryn Hill, Pras Michel and Wyclef Jean formed a group in the early ’90s called Tranzlator Crew. After signing with Columbia Records’ Ruffhouse label in 1993, they changed their name to Fugees, derived from the word refugee.
Each member of the trio had a unique musical perspective. Hill came from a choir background and was heavily inspired by R&B, soul and Motown. Pras was an instrumentalist who grew up listening to all styles of rock, while Wyclef leaned toward Caribbean and African sounds, with reggae being a particular favourite. Given this cornucopia of influences, Fugees became known for an alternative style of hip hop that they took into the mainstream.
The band recorded only two albums. Under the guidance of Kool & The Gang’s producer Ronald “Khalis” Bell, their debut Blunted On Reality came out in 1994 and spawned three singles: Boof Baf, Nappy Heads and Vocab.
It was Fugees’ follow-up and final album, 1996’s The Score, that would dominate the hip hop music scene in the late ’90s and for years to come. With lead single Fu-Gee-La a ground-breaking success, the album landed at No.1 on the Billboard 200 upon release. Its other chart-topping singles included Ready Or Not and Killing Me Softly. Achieving multi-platinum status, The Score went on to score them two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
In 1997, Fugees disbanded to pursue solo projects. They did reunite, however, in 1998 to shoot a video for the Sesame Street song Just Happy To Be Me and again in 2004 to perform at a Brooklyn concert featured in the documentary Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. They also appeared as the unannounced opening act for Black Entertainment Television’s Music Awards in 2005 with their first new material in a decade – the song Take It Easy.
In early 2021, Fugees marked the 25th anniversary of their globally acclaimed album The Score. To celebrate, the band announced Fugees: The Score 25th Anniversary Tour would be coming to London’s O2 arena for one show on Monday 6 December 2021.
