About
Canadian indie rockers with a synth sheen and a high danceability factor
Arkells may have seemed fully formed upon arrival, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. The Hamilton, Ontario quartet, formed at university by frontman Max Kerman and guitarist Mike DeAngelis, landed a Juno with their 2008 debut Jackson Square but that was just the jumping off point. With each new album, the group has expanded their sound and their world to impressive effect.
Jacksonville Square was very much a Canadian product, drawing on the homeland indie rock heroes of Kerman and his bandmates, from The Weakerthans and Constantines to Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene. Two years after its initial release, it won the band a Juno (aka the Canadian Grammys) for Best New Group.
Just a year after their Juno win, Arkells returned with Michigan Left and a slicker sound that took their pop-inflected guitar rock and made it shake and groove in all the right places, adding judicious 80s influences from the likes of U2 and INXS. The choruses were bigger, the hooks sharper and the band bagged themselves yet another Juno.
High Noon found the band partnering up with producer Tony Hoffer (Beck, Phoenix). The results were as joyously poppy and dancey as expected, pushing the band’s Springsteen worship into Killers territory and landing their biggest hit to date with Leather Jacket. Two more Junos followed.
With each consecutive release, the band pushed their sound into new territory and the awards kept flowing. Across 2016’s Morning Report and 2018’s Rally Cry, Kerman demonstrated that a focus on good times and danceability didn’t mean shying away from weighty themes like gun violence on American Screams and right-wing populism on Company Man.
In 2021, Arkells released their sixth studio album Blink Once.
