Arctic Monkeys are a four-piece indie rock band from the suburbs of Sheffield. These northern roots are a key element of their style which has been compared to The Jam, Pulp and The Streets, and labelled then as a "northern Libertines".
After forming in 2002, the band achieved their initial success via the internet, through fan-made demo tapes and online file-sharing. At the time, they were one of the first acts to make a name for themselves in this way, leading to a change in the way new bands are promoted and marketed.
Arctic Monkeys' debut single, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, and its follow-up, When The Sun Goes Down, reached No.1 in the UK Singles Chart. Their debut album, 2006's Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was among the fastest-selling debut albums in British music history.
The band's second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, came out in 2007 and saw similar success, selling over 225,000 copies in its debut week.
Since then, the Arctic Monkeys have released four more albums, with their latest being 2017's Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.
Over the years the band have won seven Brit Awards and been nominated for three Grammys. They also won the Mercury Prize in 2006, as well as received nominations in 2007, 2013 and 2018.
In 2018, Arctic Monkeys headlined several festivals including Glasgow's TRNSMT and did an autumn UK and US tour.
