Welcome to Ticketmaster's interview zone, where we get the inside story on the hottest shows direct from the stars. |
Tony HadleyTony talks to Ticketmaster about what he's looking forward to when he takes over the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago. See him on stage from Monday 29 January for a limited time only!
1. So Tony, you've landed the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago, how do you feel your music experience has prepared you for the role?
I have spent my life as a music artist, so the singing side of the role is familiar territory, and of course it means I am used to performing live to an audience. All that said, this is a whole new experience in terms of interpreting a script and acting!
2. Have you had any theatre experience in the past?
No, this is my first theatre role, although I did do a concert version of Jesus Christ Superstar for BBC Radio 2. I played Jesus, Roger Daltrey played Judas and Frances Ruffelle, a previous Roxie Hart in Chicago, played Mary Magdalene.
3. Now that you've landed the role of Billy Flynn on a world stage, do you think you'll get a taste for theatre and want to do more?
I think I will wait until I open in Chicago before I can answer this! Watch this space!
4. Have you talked to any past Billy Flynn's and have they given you any tips for the role?
Ian Kelsey, who currently plays Billy Flynn, has offered to give me a hand in getting the character under my belt.
5. So what's it like backstage and what preparation have you done for the show?
It is great being backstage of the Cambridge Theatre; there is such a terrific atmosphere. Everyone is really supportive and friendly, which makes the daily rehearsals fun, whilst still being focussed.
6. What's your favourite number in Chicago?
Probably "All I Care About is Love". This is my character's opening number, and it is in the swing/jazz style that I love and am most familiar with. In fact this is the style of my latest album, "Passing Strangers".
7. If you had to sell Chicago to our readers, what would you say?
It is in its tenth year in the West End, so I think that says it all! I have seen it three times and it is always fresh and exciting, the dialogue and songs are so strong. That's why I decided to take the role.
8. Can you relate to any of the themes in Chicago?
You mean murder, greed and corruption? I guess I can relate to the role of the media in terms of the creation of celebrity. It is ironic that this was the case back in the 1920s, and is still the case today. You only have to look at programmes like Big Brother to see that.
9. How would you spend your ideal day in London and what would you advise people to do?
See Chicago when I am in the show from 29 January! I think the best thing in London is to walk around. It is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world. I love taking the kids to Chinatown.
10. Do you still keep in contact with your Spandau Ballet band mates? And what do they think about you doing Chicago?
The drummer, John Keeble, is one of my best friends and he still drums with me. I'm not sure what he thinks, but I suspect he saw it coming looking at the direction my music has taken in the past few years!
