Interviews
Welcome to Ticketmaster's interview zone, where we get the inside story on the hottest shows direct from the stars. |
Sandy and DannyGrease is certainly the word at the Piccadilly Theatre, London. You voted for your favourite Danny and Sandy on the popular ITV series, so we met up with Danny Bayne and Susan McFadden to see how things are going.
1. Congratulations on being the people's choice to play the new Danny and Sandy in Grease? How does it feel and how is it going?
Susan - It's great. It's a lovely feeling to go on stage every night in front of so many people who voted for you - there's a fantastic atmosphere in the theatre.
Danny - It feels amazing because so many people voted for us and put us where we are and we having great time doing what we love to do.
2. You did not have long between being cast and opening night. How was the rehearsal process?
Susan - We had six weeks for rehearsal which is quite a long time. We were literally thrown into rehearsals straight from the show, so we didn't have much time for things to sink in!
Danny - Hard work, took a while to get it, but eventually got there with a lot of hard graft and now really enjoying it.
3. Has David Ian given you much advice since being cast in the show and which of the judges did you respect the most?
Susan - Definitely David Ian. He was the one we all wanted to impress the most. He was also the one most connected to the musical world.
Danny - David Ian is a very busy man, so doesn't get much time to visit us at Grease. I respected all the judges equally, but performing for Brian Freedman on a regular basis was a real honour because I look up to him as a dancer and choreographer.
4. Grease is loved all over the world and the songs are known by everyone. Which songs do you enjoy performing the most and why?
Susan - I enjoy "Hopelessly Devoted to You" because it is just me on stage and it is such a great song to sing.
Danny - I love singing "Sandy" as it's my moment out there on my own. "Greased Lightnin", because it's a time to be a rock star and "You're the One That I Want", because it has the sexy feel that makes Grease what it is.
5. What were the last shows you saw in the West End and did you enjoy them?
Susan - The last musical I saw was Billy Elliot. I loved it. I thought the young boy playing Billy was phenomenal.
Danny - Last shows I saw were Wicked and Spamalot. I really enjoyed them both and recommend them to anyone who likes musical theatre.
6. Do you have dream roles that you would love to play in the West End?
Susan - I love the more modern pop musicals and Mamma Mia has always been one of my favourites. I'd love to play Sophie.
Danny - Many! Fiyero in Wicked, Roger in Rent, Ren in Footloose, Tony in Saturday Night Fever to name a few.
7. Would you ever consider a move from the stage into perhaps television or film?
Susan - Yes! I would love to. I've done a bit of television and film work back in Ireland when I was younger, so it is definitely something I hope to do more of.
Danny - You never know where the next job is going to be. I would really enjoy doing something different after a year on the stage, but am currently concentrating on the job in hand.
8. You have both spoken of your love for performing, can you describe what you love about it and when were you first bitten by the bug?
Susan - My mum sent me to stage school at the age of four and I was hooked from day. I never thought I would have a career with it but I ended up falling into it.
Danny - It is adrenalin fuelled fun. 1200 people watching you every performance, anything can happen, but it's live and you can't make a mistake. My passion for dancing started when I was eight years old and grew from there.
9. ow would you describe this production of Grease to people not sure if it is for them?
Susan - It's a very high-energy, foot-tapping, hand-clapping, feel-good show. I don't know one person who doesn't love Grease - the audiences are buzzing by the end of the show.
Danny - It is fun, young, hip and rock'n'roll!
