Jackie Clune stars in the critically acclaimed production of Billy Elliot currently playing at the Victoria Palace Theatre. Based on the smash-hit British film and with music from legendary singer-songwriter Elton John, Billy Elliot is one of the must-see musicals of the West End. Ticketmaster spoke to Jackie about playing Mrs Wilkinson and stamping her own mark on the famous role.

1. If you had to sum-up Billy Elliot, what would you tell people?
It's a heartbreaking yet ultimately uplifting tale of one working class kid’s victory over circumstance. It also features some amazing tap routines!

2. You play the role of the dance teacher, Mrs Wilkinson. What is it that appeals to you about the show and this role?
The show breaks my heart every night, and I also love its casually cruel humour. My portrayal of Mrs Wilkinson has bitterness, disappointment and despair at its heart. She's a failed dancer growing old in a dead end marriage - all until this remarkable boy comes along. She has a bit of Mrs Robinson, a bit of Lady Macbeth and a bit of Masha. What's not to like?!

3. Haydn Gwynne and Sally Dexter previously played the role of Mrs Wilkinson. What was it like to follow such well-known British actresses in such a famous West End role?
Haydn and Sally were both great - I saw them both play the role. But I wasn't daunted by rising to that challenge; I was only worried about the lycra!

4. Billy Elliot is directed by award-winning director Stephen Daldry and has music composed by Sir Elton John. Were you looking forward to working with such famous colleagues? Is it at all a bit daunting?
I have yet to meet Sir Elton, which I am really looking forward to. As for Stephen, the first time I met him we instantly started abusing each other and I adore him. He's brilliant, and so much fun.

5. Julie Walters portrayed Mrs Wilkinson in the Bafta Award-winning film version. As an actress, is it difficult to try and stamp your own mark on the role?
A few people have actually commented that I remind them a bit of Julie Walters in the film, which is a huge compliment. I'd say that I have tried to play her as a tragi-comic heroine.

6. We know you as an actress, writer, cabaret performer and broadcaster. Is there a medium you prefer?
Doris Stokes. Not really - I love to sing.

7. You recently starred in the musical Mamma Mia! Will you be back to see the show in the West End now that you are treading the boards at the Victoria Palace Theatre in Billy Elliot?
I loved Mamma Mia! and can honestly say I never got bored of it. I don't think I could watch it though, because I know how much fun it is and I'd be jealous! I'd love to play Donna again one day.

8. What do you look for when selecting a role in musical theatre?
A great character with some killer songs and nice shoes! There are a few roles I'd love to do - Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Roxie in Chicago (although I'm too old now!) and any Sondheim really.

9. What would your advice be to any aspiring theatre actors?
Advice to other actors? Hmmm. Don't take the rejection personally, as it's all mixed up with timing, economics and luck.

10. What is the last West End show that you saw? Did you enjoy it?
The last show I saw was Rafta Rafta at the National Theatre. It was hilarious, and Meera Syal is a genius.

11. Do you have any good luck charms or superstitious rituals you perform before going on stage every night?
I like to go on stage before the house opens, take a good look at the auditorium and think, "You will be mine".

12. What is next for Jackie Clune?
I'm in Billy Elliot for a year so I'll be mostly in Victoria, but I'll be doing bits of radio comedy and I'm also writing my second novel.
