Interviews
Welcome to Ticketmaster's interview zone, where we get the inside story on the hottest shows direct from the stars. |
Elena RogerArgentinian actress Elena Roger stars in Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical, Evita. We met up with Elena to find out how playing the first woman of Argentina was going.
1. How does it feel to take the West End by Storm? Are you aware of it and are you being recognised in the street?
Well, thank you. I wasn't aware of that. I just enjoy knowing how much the audience loves the whole show. Regarding people recognising me on the streets, I can tell you it's hard for them to even recognise me when I come out through the stage door after the show!
2. How do you cope with the exhaustion of dancing, singing and carrying the show every night?
I have two days off that are very important to recover my energy after six shows. I sleep and eat well and try not to do a lot of things during the day. Being disciplined has its amazing reward and that is to be able to put everything into my performance on stage.
3. Is it very daunting to be on stage and performing in a language other than your mother tongue?
It was quite difficult at the very beginning but as time went by it got easier and easier. It's all about keeping focus really.
4. Does Eva Peron still hold a resonance for young Argentinians?
Everybody in Argentina knows who she was, some might have more knowledge than others but everybody knows her. Young Peronists hold a specific picture of her as an emblem.
5. The role of Eva Peron fits you like a glove. Are there any other classical roles you identify with and would like to perform?
I like interesting women stories but I don't have a specific one I would like to perform. I like it when the role knocks at my door and surprises me.
6. What is your favourite section of the show to perform?
That depends entirely on how I feel on that day at that specific show. I couldn't really tell until I'm actually performing.
7. Have your family been to see you in Evita yet? If so what did they make of your new life in London?
My brother and sister both came to the opening. We loved to spend some time together in London. They are very happy to share this new adventure with me. My parents are coming down later in the year, when I'm more settled to host them as they deserve.
8. What is your ideal way to spend a day in London?
When the weather is nice I love to walk alongside the river. If it is not so nice, I like to read or watch films drinking "mate" (typical Argentinean infusion) at home. The museums are waiting for me to visit in winter time.
9. Have you had time to see any other West End shows while you have been here? If so which did you enjoy and why?
I didn't have enough time to go anywhere really but I just had the opportunity to see "The life of Galileo" at the National. Philip Quast invited me and it was a very good exercise to improve my English comprehension. It was also a great chance to see very good theatre. Tonight I'm going to see "Sunday in the Park with George" and this time the invite comes from my mother in law! I love Stephen Sondheim so I'm looking forward to seeing that.
10. Does Argentina have a theatre capital like the UK? Has the West End got a reputation in Argentina, or is Broadway the focus?
Corrientes Street in Buenos Aires is the place where you can find commercial theatre but there are a lot of other theatres and alternative (fringe) spaces all around Buenos Aires.
Everybody in Argentina knows about Broadway as the capital of musical theatre in USA but they also know about the excellent theatre of London. I'm not sure they have heard of the "West End" specifically but they all know how good and prestigious London theatre is.
11. Are your co stars Matt Rawle and Phillip Quast looking after you?
I have to say that they are both looking after me all the time.
With Philip we have a strong bond as our characters are so close on stage. Matt is also a lovely colleague, very kind and supportive. I'm very happy to be part of this Company. They are a fabulous bunch of people.
