American alternative rock band R.E.M. are considerd to be the founding fathers of the alternative "garage" rock scene.
Formed at the beginning of the 1980s, they led the shift away from punk and hardcore back to guitar pop, but with a new alternative spin.
It took them some time to achieve the massive mainstream success they enjoy today, but the band's breakthrough record came in 1987 with the album Document and the single It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine). Following this, they scored bigger hits with 1998's Green, 1991s Out Of Time and 1992s Automatic For The People, which contained the melancholy masterpiece Everybody Hurts.
